As Andy Murray draws closer to a third Sports Personality of the Year title, we camp followers find ourselves brushing off the laptops for another tribute. It’s a tricky business. As Christmas approaches, what fresh superlatives can be hurled at the man who has heard them all?



One possibility would be to backpedal over familiar ground: his second Wimbledon title, his second Olympic gold medal, his rise to No. 1 in the world. Except that these honours are starting to feel like a catechism. By Jan 1, they will sound as familiar as The Fairytale of New York.

So how about breaking up the rhythm a little bit – something that Murray loves to do on court – and concentrating on his normality for once?
