Arina Rodionova to compete in US Open for first time after gaining wildcard

VICTORIAN Arina Rodionova has secured a US Open main draw berth after snaring Tennis Australia’s wildcard playoff in New Haven.

The only Australian to win a main draw singles match at Wimbledon last month, the world No 134 beat second seed Queenslandeer Lizette Cabrera 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 in the final.

Married to Hawthorn forward Ty Vickery, Rodionova will contest singles at Flushing Meadow for the first time.

Her advance boosts Australia’s main draw presence to four, joining Daria Gavrilova, Ash Barty and Ajla Tomljanovic.

Sam Stosur, the 2011 champion, misses the final major of the season with a fractured hand.

Cabrera and Melbourne’s Destanee Aiava will contest qualifying.

“It was a highly competitive three days. The ladies also had the opportunity to play alongside the WTA Connecticut Open with some of the best players in the world competing,” TA head of women’s professional tennis Nicole Pratt said.

“No matter what the score line, Arina kept trying to run down every ball. It’s her consistency and variety that forces her opponents into errors, her movement around the court is excellent and that draws her opponents into going for too much.

“With these matches under her belt combined with the positive results she has had this year there is no doubt Arina can win rounds in the main draw, she showed this at Wimbledon this year.”
